    If you’ve ever spotted that little heart with two eyes stitched onto someone’s hoodie and thought — what is that? — you’re not alone. That tiny logo has a massive story behind it. Comme des Garcons is one of those rare fashion brands that genuinely changed the way people think about clothes. Not just what to wear, but why we wear what we wear.

    What Is Comme des Garcons?

    Comme des Garcons — often written as CDG — is a Japanese luxury fashion label that started in Tokyo back in 1969. The name is French, translating to “like boys,” borrowed from a 1962 Françoise Hardy song. But don’t read too much into the name. CDG has never really been about gender. It’s been about challenging every assumption fashion ever made.

    The brand officially incorporated in 1973, opened its first Paris showroom in 1975, and made its full Paris runway debut in 1981. That debut became one of the most talked-about moments in modern fashion history — and not entirely for good reasons at first.

    The Woman Who Built CDG

    You genuinely cannot separate Comme des Garcons from its founder, Rei Kawakubo. She didn’t go to fashion school. She studied fine arts and aesthetics at Keio University, worked in advertising for a few years, and then started designing clothes in 1967 — simply because she couldn’t find what she wanted for styling photo shoots.

    That self-taught, figure-it-out-yourself energy never left her.

    When Kawakubo showed her first Paris collection in 1981, critics didn’t know what to make of it. All black. Asymmetrical cuts. Oversized silhouettes. Deliberately distressed fabric. Everything luxury fashion was supposed to not be. Some called it “Hiroshima chic.” Others called it revolutionary. Within a few years, those same critics were calling her one of the most important voices in fashion.

    By 2017, the Metropolitan Museum of Art gave her a full solo retrospective — only the second living designer ever to receive that honor after Yves Saint Laurent. At 83, she’s still creative director. Still showing in Paris. Still making fashion editors argue.

    The CDG PLAY Line — Where Most People Start

    For most people, the entry point into Comme des Garcons is the PLAY line — the one with the iconic heart logo. That heart, with its almond-shaped eyes and hand-drawn imperfection, was created by Polish artist Filip Pagowski. It’s become one of the most recognized logos in streetwear globally.

    CDG PLAY is more accessible than the main line but still carries the brand’s DNA — quality materials, clean construction, and a design sensibility that feels intentional rather than trendy. It’s the kind of piece that works in 2025 the same way it worked in 2010.

    What CDG Actually Sells

    CDG Hoodies

    The hoodies are probably what CDG PLAY is most famous for. Heavyweight cotton blends, ribbed cuffs, that heart logo either embroidered or screen-printed on the chest. Prices range roughly $210–$300 at retail, though you’ll find them on sale at various authorized stores.

    Construction is solid — stitching holds up over years of wear, preshrunk fabric maintains size and shape after washing. These aren’t fashion pieces you cycle through seasonally. People keep CDG hoodies for years.

    Fit runs slightly relaxed. Japanese sizing trends a little smaller than American brands, so if you’re between sizes and want a fitted look, size down.

    CDG T-Shirts

    The tees use 100% cotton at around 180–200 GSM — heavy enough to hold structure without feeling stiff. Standard PLAY tees retail around $90–$140, with collaboration pieces going higher.

    The heart logo shows up in a lot of different configurations: single chest logo, double hearts, multi-heart prints, striped versions. Enough variety to build a small collection without everything looking the same.

    CDG Long Sleeves

    Long sleeves sit between the tees and hoodies — great for layering, great for transitional weather. Most pieces run $90–$190 depending on complexity. Some are simple cotton tees with long sleeves. Others have mixed fabrics, contrasting panels, or more involved construction that shows Kawakubo’s design influence filtering down into casual pieces.

    CDG Converse

    In 2009, Kawakubo partnered with Converse to redesign the classic Chuck Taylor. She stripped the contrast stitching for cleaner lines and added the Pagowski heart. The result became so popular it’s been rereleased every year since 2015.

    CDG Converse run about $125–$155 depending on colorway. One critical sizing note: CDG Converse run half a size large. If you’re normally a 10, order 9.5. This isn’t a rumor — Converse states it officially. Size down.

    Why Does CDG Cost What It Costs?

    Fair question. A $270 hoodie needs to justify itself.

    The honest answer is construction. Japanese production standards mean reinforced stitching at stress points, preshrunk fabrics that maintain sizing and shape after repeated washing, and logos — embroidered or printed — that don’t crack, fade, or peel over time. These pieces are built to last three to five years of regular wear.

    Do the math: $270 divided by 300 wears over five years is $0.90 per wear. A fast fashion hoodie at $40 that falls apart after 20 washes works out to $2 per wear before you replace it.

    That math only makes sense if longevity matters more than upfront cost. If budget is tight, fast fashion exists for good reason — no judgment either way.

    CDG in Streetwear Culture

    CDG occupies a unique space in the streetwear world. It’s not hypewear in the way Supreme is. It’s not quiet luxury in the way heritage brands are. It sits somewhere between — intellectual without being pretentious, recognizable without screaming for attention.

    Collaborations have helped cement that position. CDG has worked with Supreme, BAPE, Nike, Stussy, and others. Each collab brings new audiences into the CDG universe without compromising the brand’s core aesthetic.

    That crossover is intentional. Kawakubo built CDG to challenge fashion’s boundaries — including the boundary between high fashion and street culture.

    How to Care for CDG Pieces

    You spent real money on these. Treat them right.

    Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Hot water breaks down cotton fibers and causes polyester blends to lose shape. Turn garments inside out before washing to protect logos from friction.

    Air dry when possible. If you use a dryer, low heat only. Hang hoodies to dry, lay tees flat to prevent shoulder stretching.

    For CDG Converse: clean canvas with mild soap and cold water. Never machine wash. Stuff with newspaper when drying to help them hold shape and absorb moisture.

    Do this consistently and CDG pieces hold up for years. Logos don’t peel. Colors don’t wash out. Hems don’t unravel. The quality is there — you just have to maintain it.

    Final Thoughts

    Comme des Garcons has been defying expectations for over fifty years. From a self-taught designer in Tokyo to a brand with a Metropolitan Museum of Art retrospective, CDG’s story is genuinely unlike anything else in fashion.
